I have just completed the maintenance shed model and it builds very well. I am still figuring out how to do photos and such so I am adding a link to my post on paper model to share the photos. If this is not ok I understand and apologize.

I also built this model and like you I thought the chiminy was overbering and used a stove pipe instead.

I also built the maintenance shed (the O Scale Freebie version). I added on to the chimney so it would reach the ground, and moved it to the side of the building. My thinking was that a wood or coal stove would feed into the chimnney via a metal pipe inside the structure. I'll try to send a picture.
