Discussion > Small Forge

Well here we go again. I have just completed all the components of the Small Forge but haven"t a clue on how to put it together. The base structure has enough tabs for 2 buildings. I thought that I should cut off some of them but spent way to much time to ruin it now. The roof sections are way to large or should I be kind and say they are generous. HELP! again!

Hi Ron
I haven't looked at this kit for quite a while. Let me review it and get back to you. But one question, what do you mean that the "base structure has enough tabs for 2 buildings"?

OK Ron, I've reviewed the kit and let's see if I can make sense of some things. First of all, the HO kit IS pretty much TWO complete buildings. We provided walls with two different types of windows, rectangular and arched. This is one of our earliest kits and we were new to the game and MAY have provided more tabs than you wanted, but what is there makes sense. There is a full tab around the top and bottom and where the sides glue together. You say that the roof is too large. It is not. There is quite a bit of overhang. Look at the cover picture. The roof sticks out a lot. As far as the roof panels, this kits' roof is really cool when done well. YES, there are many extra pieces for you to use any way that you want. BUT, if you start with the basic roof panels, the ones that are fully rectangular, and then layer the partial pieces on top of them, you get a very stiff roof with lots of depth and character. Some of the basic roof sections are at lease 3 layers deep and one, I believe is 5. You also get a couple of different treatments for the gable ends. One thing I do remember about the roof that is probably not as apparent as it should be, is that the 4 pieces that make up the gable and their short connecting sections ARE larger in perimeter than the building walls. You should use scraps of card or even cardboard as shims to space them out from the walls appropriately. I know that this is a lot to absorb, but put the walls together to get the basic building square, I would use a sheet of scrap to make a bottom stiffener and glue it to those bottom tabs, which fold in. Next build the roof gable and sides so you can see how much bigger than the walls that it is. Fill the gap with filler strips laminated till you get it all square. Overlap the bottom edge of the gable JUST SLIGHTLY over the top edge of the walls. I think everything else is pretty simple from there.
Good luck. Call if you need more help.

Ron,

I just finished this model a couple of weeks ago (although I haven't added the chimney and blower). There are a couple of redundant tabs. Just leave all of them on until you are ready to glue, then either cut off the tab you don't need, or glue tab to tab. I chose to model the roof as in good repair, so I have only three layers on the roof on the top section. http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/Donald_Albury/media/20140903_123321_zps735161ca.jpg.html This photo is not the best, taken in my garage with poor lighting, but you can see how the roof fits. I did have to adjust the sides of the top section to properly fit over the ridge cap on the lower roof. I also used 1/32 inch basswood under the roof, and 1/8 inch basswood for the base.

Thanks Dave, Thom and Donald. I did finally cut of the redundant tabs on the side walls and am close to finishing the building. I did realize the building roof did have some overhang but the cover picture didn't appear to have that much overhang. When I finish I'll send a picture. Thanks to Donald, because he verified the fact the side walls had extra tab. Donald I really enjoyed seeing your pictures Thanks again.

Hi guys. I'm glad things have straightened themselves out. I must apologize. After looking at the kit A SECOND TIME, this time with my glasses on, I see what you mean about extra tabs. We put that kit out a long time ago and while I WANT to say that "we were just allowing you to be creative and give you TAB OPTIONS", I think that we just didn't know what we were doing back them. Sorry for the confusion, but again, as always, our customers are the brightest and most creative on the planet. WELL DONE.
