Discussion > Book - Scratchbuilt Buildings the Kirtley Way
I recently purchased this book by Peter Smith from Amazon. The book covers construction using cardstock textures and is a useful reference and idea generator for both cardstock scratchbuilding and kit bashing. Although the author uses Kirtley photorealistic papers, the methods apply equally well to Clever paper kits and textures - actually, I prefer the look of the Clever textures. The author uses mixed media techniques employing cardstock, foamboard and wood. The models illustrated are English, but the techniques are universal.
Based on what Rick said in his comment, I bought this book. It is a very good read. There are many good construction methods shown in very good detail. I am obviously prejudiced in that I think our papers are better, but his are very good. They are quite realistic and I will probably use some because since they are primarily UK derived, he has many that we don't have. I think our New England builders would find a lot that they will like. Obviously our kits don't fall into the scratch-building category, but many of the techniques shown would really enhance your model building. If fact, one of my goals, for a long time, has been to build a model, as completely from paper as I can, and enter it into a "craftsman" model contest and walk away a winner. I have had a rather large 2 story Georgian 2 flat under construction for about 5 years now, that I might just have to get back to. MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Cheers,
Rick M
