Discussion > Philly Modular possibilities

I love the Philly Modular Flat, and as it says in the description, it can become a full building kit. This one's a hybrid - it's still a set of backdrop buildings, but built out quite a bit. There are also some additions on the ground floors from other kits to add some door functionality and loading docks.

Very nice work. That has the right look. Is it just card for backing, or have you used a heavier material?

It's all just 65-lb cardstock - heavily reinforced structurally top to bottom, side to side and with a full sheet against the backdrop. Although the kit has vertical and horizontal reinforcements, I found that putting in a "floor" at every story or every other story anchored everything and kept things square and plumb.

Thanks for the reply. I think your system of structure is good and I am confident that my idea for a build is feasible for my layout. And, that coal breaker is very impressive. Thanks again.

Unless you're planning on finishing the interiors of these buildings, Mike, I always take Clever's advise and use lots of internal reinforcements - for larger buildings it just makes sense to install them as you build to keep things square and plumb. For the coal breaker I had a big sheet of foam board that really came in handy - that stuff cuts fairly well on my table saw. I'm glad you like the breaker - that thing was a big project - sort of like building a wedding cake and was quite repetitive, but as it grew taller it got smaller.
