The silver city mine building

More pix to share. These come from Gael Troughton who in the persuit of accurascy, went to Google Earth and after a challenging search, found Street View pictures of the prototype.  I think I inadvertantly made that job tougher by calling the kit “Silver City”.  It’s actually located just off the V&T end of the line in Virginia City.

Gael’s model is a very accurate rendition and beautifully built here in HO.

Thanks for sharing Gael.

Thanks, Thom! Just a minor note: first name is spelled GAEL. While searching for the location of the mine shed on Google Earth, I started in Silver City, NV, assuming that's where it was located. Silver City, NV is SE of Virginia City, and an old mining town, too. There's a lot of old metal mining sheds and buildings there, and they would be great models, too. So many buildings, so little time . . . . . . GAEL

Thanks Steve and John. This is a very versatile model, and can be used for a lot of different scenes, besides mining. I "rusted-up" the corrugated roofing to get it closer to the prototype, but it can be left as it comes in the kit (no rust), or heavily rusted. I coated the model with Testors Dullcote, then lightly brushed on rosewood Floquil stain. I wasn't sure how the floquil would work on paper, but with Dullcote protecting the paper, it seemed to work just fine. I also used coffee stir sticks glued to the interior bracing, which reall helped. My model was kit-bashed to be more true to the prototype, and this kit lends itself to being transformed into other configurations. These corrugated metal buildings seem to be common around the mining areas of Nevada (and elsewhere). These buildings are used in the oilfields, in agriculture, railroads, and EVERYWHERE!
